Woodland Biofuels Inc., based in Toronto, is making a substantial investment of $1.35 billion in the Port of South Louisiana to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant and an ultra-green hydrogen facility. The first phase of the project will focus on constructing the largest carbon negative RNG facility globally, while the second phase will see the development of the world's largest carbon negative ultra-green hydrogen plant. By utilizing waste biomass, Woodland plans to produce sustainable biofuel to be used in transportation, heating, and electricity generation, with commercial operations expected to commence in 2028. The new facility, to be situated at the Globalplex multimodal facility at the Port of South Louisiana, aims to remove hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere annually and store it underground. Phase 1 is estimated to permanently remove 210,000 metric tons of CO2 yearly, while Phase 2 will target approximately 660,000 metric tons annually, making the project one of the largest carbon dioxide removal initiatives globally. Woodland Biofuels' CEO, Greg Nuttall, expressed enthusiasm about the project's potential economic impact on St. John Parish and the surrounding areas. The initiative is expected to create high-paying jobs and contribute to the state's workforce development.
