CNH Brand STEYR and TU Wien Collaborate on FCTRAC Biogenic Hydrogen Tractor Project
Key Ideas
  • STEYR and TU Wien collaborated on a hydrogen fuel cell-powered tractor project aimed at end-to-end sustainability.
  • The innovative tractor, FCTRAC, features a hydrogen fuel cell power unit developed in Austria and a BioH2Module that produces hydrogen from biogenic raw materials.
  • The FCTRAC has a high-voltage battery system, emits only water vapor, and matches the power of its diesel equivalent.
  • The project received attention and a nomination at the Austrian State Prize for Technology awards, recognizing its groundbreaking innovation in mobility technologies.
STEYR, a CNH brand, and TU Wien have unveiled the FCTRAC project, an innovative hydrogen fuel cell-powered tractor. The tractor, based on a standard STEYR 4140 Expert CVT model, was developed in collaboration with CNH's engineering team in Austria and project partners. The project aimed for end-to-end sustainability, utilizing a BioH2Module to produce hydrogen from biogenic raw materials. The FCTRAC features a 14 kWh high-voltage battery and a 400 V electrical system, generating 95 kW of power comparable to its diesel counterpart. The fuel cell and electric drive systems replace the diesel engine, ensuring no compromise on power. The project gained recognition at the Austrian State Prize for Technology awards in the 'Mobility Technologies' category. CNH Industrial, the parent company, focuses on innovation, sustainability, and productivity across its global and regional brands, including STEYR, Case IH, and New Holland. With a history of over two centuries, CNH continues to pioneer in the agriculture and construction sectors, emphasizing customer success and workplace diversity.
