FortisBC Energy Inc., a utility based in Surrey, B.C., is collaborating with Vancouver-based technology startup VulcanX Energy Corp. to develop pyrolysis technology for producing zero-emission hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas. This innovative project stems from a funding agreement signed between the two entities, with FortisBC aiming to shift towards renewable and low-carbon gases such as renewable natural gas and hydrogen. The technology utilizes a unique process involving methane and molten metal to convert natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon through pyrolysis. With the support of the Clean Growth Innovation Fund, FortisBC is investing in the engineering design of a 1-tonne per day hydrogen production plant, expected to be operational by 2026. This initiative aligns with British Columbia's CleanBC strategy, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.
