Hyundai has unveiled the second generation of its hydrogen fuel cell SUV, the Nexo, at the Korean Mobility Show in Seoul. Despite the slow adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Hyundai has pushed forward with the new Nexo, featuring a striking retro-futuristic design inspired by the 2024 Initium concept car. The SUV has been upgraded with a more usable interior, bigger boot space, and a reworked powertrain that now offers a range of over 435 miles. The new Nexo boasts a total of 201hp from its electric motor, accelerating from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds, making it faster than its predecessor. The hydrogen tank capacity has also been increased to 6.69kg, improving the overall range. Despite the positive improvements, the UK's hydrogen infrastructure remains lacking, with only four hydrogen stations available compared to thousands of electric car chargers. However, Hyundai is considering introducing the Nexo to the UK market to drive investment in hydrogen infrastructure. The Nexo's design, powertrain enhancements, and increased size position it as a desirable option in the eco-friendly vehicle segment, potentially competing with electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y, even though it may remain a niche offering due to infrastructure limitations.
