Innovative Partnership for Sustainable Steel Production in Finland
Key Ideas
  • Blastr Green Steel partners with Primetals Technologies and Midrex to establish a sustainable and efficient steel production process in Inkoo, Finland.
  • The collaboration focuses on developing a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant and an electric steelmaking melt shop, with plans for an up to 100% hydrogen-based DRI plant.
  • Advanced technology solutions, including electric arc furnace systems and automation, will optimize production and enhance safety standards, contributing to the decarbonization of European iron and steelmaking.
  • The partnership aims to achieve ultra-low CO₂ steel production targets through innovative technologies like the MIDREX Plant and Arvedi ESP technology, promoting a net-zero direct CO₂ emissions approach for steel manufacturing.
Blastr Green Steel has selected Primetals Technologies as its technology partner for an upcoming steel plant in Inkoo, Finland, with a capacity to produce 2.5 million tonnes of ultra-low CO₂ steel annually. The collaboration will involve key aspects of iron and steel production, including the development of a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, an electric steelmaking melt shop, an Arvedi ESP line, and a continuous pickling and galvanising line. Primetals Technologies and Midrex are set to work on creating an up to 100% hydrogen-based DRI plant, leveraging innovative technologies to establish a sustainable and efficient steel production process. The partnership will ensure the new facilities align with the latest industry standards for carbon emission reduction. The focus on sustainability extends to advanced technology solutions like electric arc furnace systems and automation, designed to optimize production and enhance safety standards. The partnership aims to drive innovation in steel production, as stated by Mark Bula, CEO of Blastr Green Steel. By implementing the MIDREX H2™ plant, powered by up to 100% green hydrogen, Blastr aims to supply ultra-low-carbon iron feedstock to various value chains, contributing to the decarbonization of European iron and steelmaking. Furthermore, the collaboration includes the provision of secondary metallurgy equipment for producing high-quality steel grades, and systems for off-gas treatment and waste heat recovery to ensure efficient energy reuse. The project also features an Arvedi ESP thin slab casting and hot rolling line, along with a continuous pickling and galvanising line to produce coated steel sheets for industrial applications. Mikael Lindvall, Chief Technology Officer of Blastr Green Steel, emphasizes the importance of technology in meeting their ultra-low CO₂ targets, highlighting the MIDREX Plant and Arvedi ESP technology as key solutions on the path to achieving their emission goals.
