Australia and the UK have extended their cooperation on renewable energy technologies and international climate action with a new partnership agreement. This collaboration, which builds upon a previous agreement signed during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, focuses on two core pillars. The first pillar, dedicated to net zero technology cooperation, will see the two nations supporting hydrogen, offshore wind, energy storage, and clean transport technologies. They also plan to collaborate on creating common standards in these areas. The second pillar of the partnership emphasizes international climate cooperation, with a specific focus on coordinating global climate action under the Paris Agreement. This involves leveraging key multilateral groupings such as the G20, the IEA, and the UNFCCC to enhance global climate ambition. The partnership aims to strengthen the economies of both Australia and the UK. Additionally, a separate initiative between Australia and India, the India-Australia Renewable Energy Partnership (REP), has been officially launched during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The REP aims to facilitate practical cooperation in priority areas like solar PV, green hydrogen, energy storage, and skills training for the renewable energy workforce. Furthermore, the cooperation agreement allows Indian partners to invite selected Australian firms with digital-enabling technology and energy storage solutions to conduct pilot projects in India. These partnerships reflect a positive step towards enhancing renewable energy cooperation, driving global climate action, and fostering economic growth through sustainable practices.
