- The truck features Toyota fuel cells, a battery system, and hydrogen storage providing 450-500km range, with comparable refueling times to diesel.
- New Zealand's first 20 zero-emission hydrogen trucks are part of a government-supported program, promoting a robust hydrogen ecosystem and carbon neutrality.
- Hydrogen technology advancements by TR Group and its partners aim to reduce carbon emissions and shape a sustainable future for heavy transport in New Zealand.
TR Group, in collaboration with Global Bus Ventures (GBV), Toyota New Zealand, and other partners, has launched a hydrogen 50-tonne prime mover truck at Hampton Downs Racetrack in New Zealand. This truck, converted from a DAF CF 530 truck to hydrogen, offers a practical zero-emissions solution for heavy freight transport. It can operate with conventional trailers and loads, with comparable refueling times to diesel. The vehicle's energy comes from two Toyota 85kW fuel cells, a 124kWh battery system, and 52kg of onboard hydrogen storage, providing a range of 450-500km.
The launch of this prime mover truck represents years of research and development, marking a significant milestone for the company. TR Group has been actively involved in decarbonization efforts, with over 60 battery-electric trucks and the first commercial heavy hydrogen truck in New Zealand.
The initiative also includes 16 hydrogen 50-tonne prime movers and other hydrogen truck options. The hydrogen fuel cell trucks are part of a government-supported program in collaboration with Hiringa Energy, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote a sustainable energy landscape in New Zealand. The Hiringa refueling network covers 95% of North Island freight routes, allowing transport operators to decarbonize supply chains without impacting productivity.
Hyundai New Zealand has also shown support by introducing four Xcient heavy-duty hydrogen trucks to complement the success of the first Hyundai truck operated by NZ Post contractor Shea Transport. With advancements in hydrogen technology and government support, the goal is to build a robust hydrogen ecosystem that benefits both businesses and communities, promoting a cleaner and more efficient transport industry in New Zealand.
