In Chester County, the Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA) is taking steps to reduce methane emissions and generate renewable energy by partnering with French company Waga Energy. This collaboration aims to convert degraded landfill waste into renewable natural gas, which will be used to heat more than 4,000 homes in the region. Landfills are significant contributors to climate change due to methane emissions, the third-largest human-caused source according to the EPA. By converting methane into a usable energy source, these projects not only reduce emissions but also contribute to mitigating global warming. The new technology employed by Waga Energy involves vacuuming methane out of landfills, purifying the gas, and sending it to the gas grid via a pipeline, avoiding the combustion process that releases emissions. This innovative approach is expected to eliminate about 15,000 tons of CO2 per year and significantly increase the number of homes heated by renewable natural gas. By converting landfill gas into energy, SECCRA and Waga Energy are showcasing a sustainable solution that benefits both the environment and the community, turning what was once seen as waste into a valuable asset for energy production and climate action.
