Empowering Sustainability: Plug Power Inc. Supports H2DRIVEN Project with PEM Electrolyzers
Key Ideas
  • Plug Power Inc. secures a contract with H2DRIVEN in Portugal to provide Technical Evaluation Phase (TEP) support for 25 MW of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzers for a green methanol project.
  • The project aims to produce 80,000 tons of green methanol annually by combining synthesis gas from biomass gasification with green hydrogen generated through water electrolysis powered by solar energy.
  • H2DRIVEN's initiative seeks to stimulate the economy, drive innovation, diversify production systems, reduce emissions, and support EU technological sovereignty through R&D investments.
  • Once the TEP is completed successfully, the project will move on to the Final Investment Decision (FID) phase with an expected operational timeline by the end of 2026.
Plug Power Inc., based in Latham, N.Y., has announced a significant contract with H2DRIVEN, a project in Portugal developed by Dourogás and CapWatt. The agreement entails Plug providing Technical Evaluation Phase (TEP) support for 25 megawatts of its Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzers for a green methanol project. This collaboration is set to advance the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) process. H2DRIVEN plans to leverage green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis, powered by solar energy, to generate sustainable methanol for use in heavy industry and mobility applications, aligning with a cleaner energy future. Plug's expertise in PEM technology will be pivotal in guiding the client through the FEED process. The project's goals extend beyond environmental benefits; H2DRIVEN aims to enhance the national economy, encourage innovation, and reduce CO2 emissions significantly by 2027. The successful execution of the TEP will pave the way for the Final Investment Decision (FID) phase, expected to culminate in the project's operational launch by the end of 2026.
