Ballard Power Systems and global carbon reduction company First Mode have joined forces to advance the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the mining industry. Through a recent purchase order, Ballard will supply First Mode with 30 hydrogen fuel cell modules, totaling 3 megawatts, to power ultra-class mining haul trucks. The collaboration aims to reduce diesel fuel use and promote decarbonization in the mining sector. First Mode's CEO, Julian Soles, emphasized that each Ballard fuel cell module retrofitted into a haul truck marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions. The integration of Ballard's hydrogen fuel cell modules into clean energy powerplants in Seattle, Washington, and their subsequent installation in haul trucks at First Mode's Proving Grounds in Centralia, Washington, is projected to save 2,600 tons of diesel fuel annually. The partnership also includes plans to scale production for the next generation of clean energy powerplants. First Mode has secured a global supply agreement with Anglo American to retrofit over 400 ultra-class haul trucks with their nuGen™ solution, which includes a combination of fuel cell and battery powerplant technology. This initiative underscores the commitment to sustainability and innovation within the mining industry. The collaboration between First Mode and Ballard began in 2019 with the development of the world's first 2-megawatt hybrid hydrogen fuel cell and battery powerplant in Seattle, Washington. This clean energy powerplant replaced a diesel engine on a 300-ton haul truck operating in South Africa, showcasing the potential for fuel cell commercialization in challenging sectors.
