Key Ideas
  • CB&I and Hanwha Ocean have received approval from DNV for the design of a cutting-edge 80,000 cbm LH2 carrier, enabling international liquid hydrogen supply chains.
  • The carrier's design boasts a low boil-off rate of 0.05% per day, making it efficient and safe for transporting liquid hydrogen.
  • The collaboration between CB&I, Hanwha Ocean, and DNV signifies a major step towards advancing technical maturity in LH2 transportation and promoting renewable energy solutions.
  • The AiP formalization occurred during the Gastech Exhibition & Conference in Houston, showcasing the industry's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
CB&I, a subsidiary of McDermott, and Hanwha Ocean have secured approval in principle (AiP) from DNV for their innovative liquid hydrogen (LH2) carrier design. The approval confirms that CB&I's cargo containment systems meet rigorous safety standards, enabling the construction of an 80,000 cubic meters LH2 carrier. This collaborative effort aligns with industry regulations, including the IGC Code and IMO's Interim Recommendations for LH2 carriage. The design, featuring a minimal boil-off rate of 0.05% per day, is hailed as a pivotal development in facilitating global liquid hydrogen supply chains. Executives from the companies formalized the AiP at the Gastech Exhibition & Conference in Houston, emphasizing the significance of this milestone. Mark Butts of CB&I highlighted the synergy between CB&I's storage expertise and Hanwha Ocean's gas carrier proficiency in creating a secure LH2 carrier design. The carrier incorporates vacuum-insulated double-wall spheres for efficient LH2 transport. Moreover, Youngchang Shon from Hanwha Ocean stressed the comprehensive research conducted for the carrier, addressing performance, safety, cargo handling, and an eco-friendly propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel cells. DNV's Regional Manager, Vidar Dolonen, praised the collaboration's contribution to advancing technical maturity in LH2 transportation, paving the way for a sustainable future. This partnership exemplifies the industry's commitment to innovation and sustainability, heralding a new era in liquid hydrogen transportation.
