Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC and Viritech Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on marketing, deploying, and supporting Viritech’s VPT60N powertrain for on-road commercial vehicles. Nuvera will supply its E-Series Fuel Cell Engines for integration testing with Viritech’s powertrain line. The partnership aims to address the lack of integrated solutions in fuel cell adoption by considering the development of a high-power density fuel cell system based on Nuvera’s stack technology. This system is intended for extreme applications such as aerospace, motorsports, and automotive. Viritech’s VPT60N powertrain offers configurable power delivery and energy management in a modular design, facilitating integration across various applications. The collaboration is expected to accelerate the development of fuel cell electric vehicles and lead to more efficient products within the fuel cell electric vehicle ecosystem. Viritech had previously integrated Nuvera’s E-60 engine into a hydrogen fuel cell-powered racecar, which has undergone successful demonstrations at the MIRA test facility. The vehicle will be showcased at the LCV Cenex trade show in Millbrook, UK, in September 2024. Nuvera, a subsidiary of Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., manufactures heavy-duty, zero-emission engines for mobility applications. The company has teams in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, providing products for industrial vehicles and other transportation markets. Viritech, based at the Horiba Mira automotive research center in the UK, offers energy management products and powertrain integration engineering services, aiming to advance hydrogen power in sectors like automotive, aerospace, marine, and distributed power. The collaboration between Nuvera and Viritech represents a significant step in fuel cell technology advancement for commercial and high-performance applications, potentially driving innovations in multiple industries.
