Fortescue and Liebherr's Hydrogen-Powered Haul Truck Prototype Arrives in Western Australia
Key Ideas
- Fortescue and Liebherr's hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype, Europa, successfully travelled 1,100km to the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
- Europa has a 1.6 MWh battery and 500kW of fuel cells, with the capacity to hold over 380kg of liquid hydrogen for zero-emission haulage.
- The partnership aims to introduce autonomous haul trucks with zero emissions to Fortescue's iron ore operations in the Pilbara to achieve complete terrestrial emission elimination by 2030.
- Feedback from on-site testing at Christmas Creek iron ore mine will shape the future zero-emission haul truck fleet for Fortescue Metals.
Fortescue, an Australian mining giant, in collaboration with German-Swiss manufacturer Liebherr, saw the successful arrival of their hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype, Europa, in Western Australia's Pilbara region. This prototype, a Liebherr T 264 model, is equipped with a 1.6 MWh battery developed by Fortescue's WAE division, alongside 500kW of fuel cells and the capability to store more than 380kg of liquid hydrogen.
Europa will undergo testing at the Christmas Creek iron ore mine to gather feedback for the future development of Fortescue's zero-emission haul truck fleet. The truck will be fuelled with liquid hydrogen sourced from Fortescue's Green Energy Hub at Christmas Creek, featuring both gaseous and liquid hydrogen plants.
Fortescue Metals CEO mentioned the integration of Fortescue Zero battery into the Liebherr haul truck as a significant milestone in their partnership. The companies also disclosed plans to create an integrated autonomous haulage solution to further aid in decarbonizing the mining sector.
By introducing autonomous haul trucks with zero emissions, Fortescue aims to align with its goal of complete terrestrial emission elimination by 2030 within its Australian iron ore operations. This advancement signifies a step forward in the collaboration between Fortescue and Liebherr towards sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices.
