India's First Hydrogen Train Faces Delay in Launch Due to Technical Issues
Key Ideas
  • India's first hydrogen fuel cell train launch is delayed to June due to technical issues in operating at maximum load capacity.
  • The train is being modified with a bigger fuel cell to address the capacity issue, aiming for commercial use on the Shimla-Kalka route.
  • Indian Railways plans to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, with each train estimated to cost ₹80 crore.
  • The hydrogen train, a step towards zero-emission mobility, will establish India among countries like Germany, China, and the UK in adopting hydrogen rail technology.
India's first hydrogen fuel cell train launch is facing delays until June as technical issues in operating at maximum load capacity have been discovered during testing. The train, expected to run on the heritage Kalka-Shimla route, needs modifications to increase the hydrogen fuel cell capacity. The modification process and testing are estimated to take two to three months. The Indian Railways officials aim to fortify the train tracks between Shimla and Kalka to allow speeds of around 100 km/hr. The train, capable of carrying 2,638 passengers, faces challenges operating at top speeds in extreme weather conditions. Each hydrogen train, costing ₹80 crore, aims to promote sustainable tourism and environmental conservation, part of India's green energy initiatives. With plans to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, Indian Railways targets carbon neutrality by 2030. The hydrogen-powered train will require significant water for the chemical processes, and a dedicated water storage facility will be constructed. Once launched, the train will make India part of the elite club of countries using hydrogen rail technology, alongside Germany, China, and the UK. The project also includes plans for on-ground infrastructure for hydrogen refilling, with safety approvals in place. The Railway Minister emphasized the commitment of Indian Railways towards cleaner and greener transportation for the country.
