The Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology recently presented cutting-edge defense solutions at the Taiwan Innotech Expo in Taipei. Among the unveiled products were a new composite armor material and hydrogen fuel cells designed for various military vehicles and applications. The composite armor, part of an add-on protection package, demonstrated the ability to withstand large caliber weapons fire, improving the survivability of platforms like the CM-32 infantry fighting vehicle. By utilizing silicon carbide instead of aluminum carbide, the armor achieved a superior strength-to-weight ratio. The institute also showcased its hydrogen fuel cell technology, emphasizing its energy storage capabilities and multiple military applications, such as power generation in submarines and energy storage in undersea vehicles. The cost-effective and domestically sourced components of the fuel cells make them an attractive solution for the armed forces. Despite the successful operational trials of these innovative technologies costing NT$950 million, mass production is pending interest from military entities. The demonstrated advancements hold promise for enhancing defense capabilities and efficiency in Taiwan's military sector.
