US-based energy and materials firm Modern Hydrogen has teamed up with Mesa Solutions to develop an on-site hydrogen power generation solution for data centers. Announced at the POWERGEN International Conference in Houston, the partnership focuses on using natural gas to power a Mesa Solutions generator running on 100 percent hydrogen. Modern Hydrogen's system converts natural gas into hydrogen for the generator set, offering benefits like modular solutions, transmission delay avoidance, and seamless integration with existing infrastructure. The company's pyrolysis technology enables the conversion of natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon for asphalt, providing a reliable and clean energy source. Backed by NextEra Energy and the National Grid, Modern Hydrogen aims to deliver dispatchable, reliable power to data centers. Mesa Solutions CEO highlighted the innovation in combining hydrogen production with on-site power generation for optimal reliability and cost-effectiveness. The growing interest in hydrogen-based solutions in data centers is evident, as seen with Equinix's deployment of hydrogen fuel cells in Dublin and Honda's use of a hydrogen fuel cell system in California. While hydrogen technology is still developing and faces supply chain challenges, its potential for cost-effective commercialization in the future is promising.
