BMW is making waves in the automotive industry with the upcoming debut of their hydrogen powered SUV, the iX5. While the electric iX5 is set for an international launch in 2026, rumors are rife about a hydrogen powered version also being in the pipeline. This new hydrogen powertrain is being developed in partnership with Toyota and will feature fuel cells sourced from Toyota's hydrogen facility in Munich, Germany. Unlike traditional petrol and diesel engine options in the BMW X5, this innovative SUV will rely on hydrogen as its primary fuel source. Similar to electric vehicles, the hydrogen powered SUV will feature an electric motor, but its energy storage system will involve tanks that store hydrogen, converting it into electricity via fuel cells to drive the vehicle. One of the key advantages of this technology is the quick refueling time, with the ability to fill the tank in just 3-4 minutes, providing convenience akin to filling up with petrol or diesel. The iX5 concept promises impressive performance, delivering 401 bhp and accelerating from 0-100 kmph in under 6 seconds. The fuel cell in the SUV can provide 172 bhp, with additional power coming from a lithium-ion battery situated beneath the boot. The vehicle's range is also commendable, with two hydrogen tanks offering a combined capacity of 6 kg and a range of up to 504 km when fully fueled.
