Sea Change: The First Hydrogen-Fueled Ferry in the U.S. Sets Sail
Key Ideas
- Switch Maritime's Sea Change, the first hydrogen-fueled vessel in the U.S. to receive U.S. Coast Guard approval, is set to operate for zero-emission public ferry service.
- Featuring a hydrogen power system, the Sea Change uses fuel cells from Cummins and electric motor propulsion from BAE Systems for eco-friendly transit up to 300 nautical miles.
- The COI approval marks a significant milestone for the maritime industry, showcasing the viability of carbon-neutral vessels and paving the way for further innovation in zero-emission maritime transportation.
- Switch Maritime plans to expand its fleet with larger and faster hydrogen-powered ferries, aiming to accelerate the adoption of net-zero vessels in major ferry markets both nationally and internationally.
Switch Maritime, a developer of zero-emission maritime vessels, has received the Certificate of Inspection (COI) from the U.S. Coast Guard for its hydrogen-fueled ferry, the Sea Change. The Sea Change, built in Bellingham, Wash., is a 75-passenger catamaran ferry that integrates a hydrogen power system from Zero Emission Industries. It incorporates 360 kW of fuel cells from Cummins and 600 kW of electric motor propulsion from BAE Systems, enabling eco-friendly transit over long distances at speeds up to 15 knots.
Pace Ralli, the CEO of Switch Maritime, expressed gratitude for the U.S. Coast Guard's support, highlighting the COI as a significant milestone for the maritime industry and a step towards demonstrating the feasibility of carbon-neutral vessels. After a pilot service operated by the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), the Sea Change will be incorporated into a permanent ferry route.
In addition to the Sea Change, Switch Maritime is working on designing larger and faster hydrogen-powered ferries for various ferry markets. The company aims to mitigate regulatory and construction risks for operators and plans to offer leasing options for the new vessels. This initiative seeks to drive the adoption of net-zero vessels and foster innovation in sustainable maritime transportation.
