Toyota and GBV Launch 50-tonne Hydrogen Prime Mover in New Zealand
Key Ideas
  • TR Group, GBV, and Toyota New Zealand launch a 50-tonne hydrogen prime mover for heavy freight transport, offering a practical zero-emissions solution.
  • The truck is retrofitted as a fuel cell electric vehicle conversion, operates with conventional trailers, and has comparable refueling times with diesel.
  • Government-supported program with Hiringa Energy will see TR Group offer 20 hydrogen-powered trucks through a Fully Maintained Operating Lease, representing a significant investment.
  • Toyota New Zealand promotes hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, actively supporting the domestic hydrogen industry and showcasing innovative hydrogen applications.
TR Group, in partnership with Global Bus Ventures (GBV) and Toyota New Zealand, has introduced a 50-tonne hydrogen-powered prime mover at an event in New Zealand. The truck, converted by GBV into a zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle, presents a practical solution for heavy freight transport. With the ability to operate like a conventional diesel truck but without emissions, this vehicle is based on the DAF CF 530 and equipped with Toyota fuel cells, a battery system, and hydrogen storage, offering a range of 500km. The launch is part of a Government-supported initiative where TR Group will lease 20 hydrogen-powered trucks through Hiringa Energy. Toyota New Zealand, a key supporter of hydrogen technology, supplied the fuel cells for the prime mover. The company sees hydrogen as integral to a clean energy future and is investing in diverse hydrogen applications across sectors, including heavy-duty vehicles and marine vessels. Toyota's commitment to hydrogen extends to commercial fleets and maritime use, as showcased by the introduction of Toyota Mirai FCEVs in New Zealand and a hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat during the America's Cup races. Grant Doull, TR Group's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck Project Manager, highlights the company's dedication to decarbonization and supporting low-emission technologies in heavy transport. By collaborating with industry partners and focusing on infrastructure development, TR Group aims to demonstrate the viability and scalability of hydrogen solutions in New Zealand's transportation sector.
