Cheshire Residents Encouraged to Engage in Consultation for Groundbreaking Hydrogen Pipeline
Key Ideas
- Cadent Gas is proposing a 100km underground hydrogen pipeline in Cheshire to distribute low carbon hydrogen, primarily from EET Hydrogen at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex.
- The project named HyNet North West aims to produce, store, and distribute hydrogen, as well as capture and store carbon from industrial sites, forming the UK's first 100% hydrogen network.
- Community feedback from consultation stages is crucial in shaping the project's design, with further development expected to reach a final decision in 2026, contributing to decarbonization and job creation in the region.
- The consultation, running until November 19, includes in-person and online events to gather input from local communities, authorities, and industry partners on the detailed pipeline plans.
Residents in Cheshire are being called upon to participate in a consultation regarding a proposed new 100km underground hydrogen pipeline by Cadent Gas. The pipeline, part of the HyNet North West project, aims to distribute low carbon hydrogen primarily produced at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex near Ellesmere Port to industrial sites in the North West region. While the pipeline will be buried underground, it will require several Hydrogen Above Ground Installations and Block Valve Installations along its route. Cadent is seeking a Development Consent Order from the Government and is engaging in three stages of consultation to gather feedback from the community, industry partners, and authorities.
The project, aimed at decarbonizing the North West and aiding in reaching net zero emissions, involves the production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen, as well as the capture and storage of carbon from industrial facilities. Once the final design is completed, Cadent plans to submit an application in Spring 2025 for approval in 2026. Project director Rob Donovan emphasized the importance of community input in refining the project's plans to ensure success.
Stressing the significance of the project in achieving decarbonization goals and creating green jobs, Donovan highlighted the role of the hydrogen pipeline in reshaping the region's energy landscape positively. The consultation period, ending on November 19, includes various in-person and online events for stakeholders to learn about the project and provide their opinions on the detailed plans.
