Costain to Lead Study on Integrating Hydrogen Refuelling Stations into UK Gas Network
Key Ideas
- Costain to explore integrating hydrogen refuelling stations into the UK's gas network for zero-emission vehicles
- Study aims to overcome hurdles and increase viability of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, particularly for heavy-duty applications
- Research will analyze current and future road transport demands, economics, and consumer impact for a successful energy transition
- Initiative aligns with Wales & West Utilities' HyDrive project to address the lack of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in Wales and the south west of England
Costain has been chosen by Wales & West Utilities to lead a study investigating the integration of hydrogen refuelling stations into the UK's existing gas network. This project, funded by Ofgem, aims to leverage the natural gas network to support hydrogen fuelling infrastructure in preparation for the rise in demand for zero-emission vehicles. The research will focus on solutions to enhance the viability of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, especially targeting heavy-duty vehicles with high mileage and limited refuelling opportunities. The study forms part of the HyDrive initiative by WWU to tackle the absence of hydrogen refuelling stations in Wales and the south west of England.
Costain's energy sector director, Laura Hughes, emphasized the significant role of hydrogen in the UK's decarbonisation efforts. The company's expertise in handling hydrogen safely will ensure practical and actionable outcomes from the research. By collaborating with regional stakeholders, Costain will assess current and future transport needs, identify potential locations for hydrogen refuelling stations, and evaluate the economic implications and consumer benefits of adopting this technology. The report intends to guide gas distribution networks, hydrogen producers, and refuelling infrastructure providers in facilitating long-term cost savings for consumers amidst the energy transition.
Furthermore, the study aligns with the broader goal of promoting alternative fuels and innovations in the transportation sector. It will contribute valuable insights to the industry and support the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. The article concludes by mentioning the upcoming CiTTi Awards event, which will recognize achievements and advancements in alternative fuels, highlighting the ongoing progress and commitment to sustainable transportation in the UK.
