Japanese shipbuilding company TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING recently launched Japan's first tugboat equipped with a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine. The vessel, unveiled in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, on March 28, 2025, is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. Developed as part of The Nippon Foundation's "Zero Emission Ships Project," the tugboat is designed to minimize environmental impact while maintaining high power output. By integrating hydrogen fuels, the vessel is expected to achieve a 60% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional tugboats. The tugboat features twin 12-cylinder hydrogen-blended engines, delivering a combined power of 4,400 horsepower. It also incorporates a high-pressure hydrogen gas storage system capable of holding approximately 250 kg of hydrogen, ensuring continuous operations. A noteworthy aspect of the vessel is its dual-fuel capability, allowing it to switch to conventional marine fuels in case of any hydrogen fuel system issues without compromising safety or performance. Moreover, the tugboat's hull is constructed using "JGreeX" steel, developed by JFE Steel Corporation, which significantly reduces CO₂ emissions by offsetting carbon produced during manufacturing. This eco-friendly steel enables a 100% reduction in steel-related emissions, further enhancing the vessel's sustainability. TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING is actively engaging in the development of alternative-fuel vessels, including those powered by hydrogen, LNG, and methanol.
