Green Hydrogen Hub to Boost Moray's Whisky Industry and Create Jobs
Key Ideas
  • Around 100 highly-skilled jobs will be created in Moray through the construction of a green hydrogen hub to support the whisky industry.
  • The hub, based in Marypark near Ballindalloch, will produce green hydrogen to fuel over 40 industrial sites including whisky distilleries, supporting decarbonisation.
  • Developers Storegga are leading the project with support from the Scottish Government, aiming to save 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and create 200MW of green hydrogen by 2032.
  • The initiative includes ongoing public consultations, community engagement, and a commitment to benefit both the region and its residents through clean energy production.
The Scottish Government and developers Storegga are collaborating to build a multi-million pound green hydrogen hub in Moray, specifically in Marypark near Ballindalloch. This hub is designed to support the whisky industry in the region and is expected to create around 100 permanent, high-skilled jobs for the local community. The green hydrogen produced at the hub will be utilized to provide fuel and energy for over 40 industrial sites, including whisky distilleries, as part of efforts to decarbonize the sector. The project, supported by the Scottish Government, is led by Storegga and aims to save approximately 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by 2032. Additionally, the hub is expected to generate 200MW of green hydrogen, equivalent to heating more than 8000 homes. Through the production of green hydrogen, the hub will contribute to a 35% reduction in the Scottish whisky sector's 2018 baseline emissions, which is equivalent to removing around 135,000 cars from roads in Scotland. Storegga is actively engaging with the local community through public consultations to incorporate feedback into the development plans. The project also emphasizes a commitment to benefiting both the region and its residents, ensuring that the initiative aligns with sustainability goals and supports clean energy production. The development of green hydrogen, made from renewable energy sources, presents an opportunity to fuel transportation, provide industrial heat, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
