BMW Group Plant Regensburg Embraces Hydrogen for Intralogistics
Key Ideas
- BMW Group Plant Regensburg will use hydrogen-powered tugger trains and forklift trucks for all transport and logistics tasks starting in 2026.
- The transition aims to optimize logistics processes, save space, and contribute to the company's digital and sustainable future.
- A two-kilometer-long hydrogen pipeline network with filling stations will supply the logistics fleet, reducing the need for battery replacements and streamlining operations.
- The project aligns with BMW Group's commitment to operational excellence and environmental sustainability at its Regensburg and Wackersdorf locations.
BMW Group Plant Regensburg is set to revolutionize its production logistics by incorporating hydrogen-powered vehicles. The plan includes deploying hydrogen-powered tugger trains and forklift trucks from 2026, gradually transitioning from electric propulsion by 2030. The initiative aims to enhance efficiency, optimize logistics processes, and save valuable space within the plant. Project leaders emphasize that hydrogen refueling is fast, akin to conventional fuels, with filling stations to be integrated directly within production areas. To support this transformation, a two-kilometer hydrogen pipeline network will be installed by early 2026, along with six filling stations. These stations will facilitate the supply of hydrogen for the logistics fleet, reducing the need for frequent battery replacements and operational downtime. Once fully implemented, the plant will consume approximately 150 tonnes of hydrogen annually. The project at BMW Group Plant Regensburg reflects a broader commitment to sustainable practices and operational excellence, aligning with the company's vision for a digital and eco-friendly future. By embracing hydrogen as a clean energy source, BMW aims to enhance its manufacturing processes, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen its position as a leader in automotive innovation and sustainability.
