The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in India has initiated the 'HaritSagar' Green Port Guidelines aimed at promoting sustainable development and reducing the carbon footprint of Major Ports. These guidelines focus on implementing various green initiatives such as increasing the use of renewable energy, electrifying port equipment, using alternative fuels for port crafts, installing EV charging stations, and developing LNG bunkering facilities along with hydrogen and its derivatives bunkering facilities. Major Ports are currently working on establishing a baseline for carbon emissions in 2023 and are committed to reducing CO2 emissions per ton of cargo. Over the past five years, significant strides have been made by Major Ports to reduce carbon emissions through measures like electrification of port equipment, providing ship-to-shore power supply for port crafts, and increasing the share of renewable energy generated from sources like solar and wind. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in his communication in the Rajya Sabha. The launch of the HaritSagar guidelines is a positive step towards fostering sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the maritime sector.
