Truck maker Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) is undergoing a strategic transformation as it faces financial challenges. Following what it deemed as misjudgements by its previous leadership, HVS is now concentrating on licensing its hydrogen propulsion system to ensure business sustainability. The company, having secured investment from a Qatari-based AI specialist, is pivoting away from manufacturing hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) towards licensing its technology to existing truck manufacturers. Moreover, HVS plans to retrofit diesel fleets with AI-driven emissions reduction technology to stabilize and recover its operations. Chief executive Abdul Waheed emphasized the urgency of securing a £700,000 investment to prevent legal action resulting from past decisions that led to significant supply chain debt. Despite facing difficulties, Waheed highlighted HVS's unique vehicle control and propulsion technology, developed with a £50m investment, enabling a shift towards a low-risk technology licensing model. Central to this strategy is the AI-Semas product, designed to reduce carbon emissions by five tonnes per truck annually. Waheed aims to steer the company towards revenue generation, guided by the Barclays Unreasonable Impact program. HVS has garnered recognition as a UK AI Climate Tech company by PwC, positioning it in the upcoming Net Zero Future50 report, showcasing companies driving global decarbonisation. The company's innovative approach and focus on emissions reduction signal a positive trajectory towards success amidst challenging circumstances.
