India has initiated trials for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in New Delhi, led by Tata Motors. This marks the country's first step towards hydrogen fuel for long-haul cargo vehicles, aiming to reduce emissions in freight transport and promote sustainable mobility. The trial phase will span 24 months, deploying 16 advanced vehicles with different hydrogen technologies on major freight routes like Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi-NCR. This initiative aligns with India's green energy objectives and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, assessing the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks and developing infrastructure for large-scale adoption. Tata Motors will utilize two hydrogen technologies in these trials, including Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle models, with driving ranges of 300-500 km. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the initiative, highlighting hydrogen's potential to transform India's transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance.
