Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has embarked on a groundbreaking trial of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to evaluate their suitability for long-haul transport solutions. The trial, spanning up to 24 months, will involve testing 16 trucks with different configurations and payload capacities on major freight routes in India, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and other key locations. These trucks are outfitted with state-of-the-art Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Tata Motors' Executive Director Girish Wagh both expressed confidence in hydrogen's potential to revolutionize the transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. The trial aims to collect feedback on the performance, infrastructure requirements, and commercial viability of hydrogen technology in real-world operating conditions. Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, highlighted the importance of this trial in demonstrating the role of green hydrogen in decarbonising India's transport sector. This initiative, supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, showcases Tata Motors' commitment to sustainable and high-performance transportation, with the tested vehicles offering an operational range of 300-500 km.
