Tata Motors has initiated the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy duty trucks in India to assess their viability for long haul transportation solutions. The trial period will last up to 24 months and will involve the deployment of 16 advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles with diverse configurations and payload capacities. These trucks, equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies, will operate on major freight routes across cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi-NCR. Tata Motors Executive Director, Girish Wagh, mentioned that hydrogen technology could be a viable option for heavy duty, longer duration transportation and emphasized the importance of investing in this technology. The company aims to gather real-life feedback on the performance of hydrogen-powered trucks and assess the infrastructure requirements for commercializing hydrogen. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has awarded the tender to Tata Motors for the trial run as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi have lauded the initiative, recognizing hydrogen as a promising fuel for India's transportation sector in reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. This trial represents a significant step in showcasing the potential of green hydrogen in India's transportation sector and reflects the government's commitment to driving innovation and achieving energy independence while contributing to global climate goals.
