Key Ideas
  • Apus Zero Emission faces financial challenges but remains optimistic about securing new investors for the Apus i-2 aircraft.
  • The four-seat general aviation aircraft is powered by twin fuel cell propulsion systems with innovative design elements, including incorporating hydrogen storage tanks in the wing structure.
  • Despite entering provisional administration, work on the Apus i-2 continues as the company aims to conclude the investor search by early June.
  • The company's head of propulsion system engineering is confident in finding a new backer and anticipates the first flight of the prototype could occur in the summer if financial stability is achieved.
Apus Zero Emission, the developer of the Apus i-2 aircraft, remains hopeful amidst financial difficulties as the search for new investors progresses. The company, based in Strausberg near Berlin, encountered a financial setback leading to provisional administration in early March. Despite this, the head of propulsion system engineering, Philipp Schildt, expressed optimism at the Aero Hydrogen & Battery Summit in Friedrichshafen. The Apus i-2, a four-seat aircraft, incorporates twin fuel cell propulsion systems and unique design features, such as utilizing hydrogen storage tanks as part of the wing structure. Although facing a 'financial bottleneck,' the company is actively working on the aircraft's development alongside seeking a new investor, aiming to finalize the process by early June. Schildt is positive about securing a new backer and highlighted ongoing discussions. The powertrain of the Apus i-2 can deliver 135kW, with additional small high-voltage battery packs for peak power demands. Recent tests at the Strausberg site, including thermal protection system evaluations, mark progress despite financial uncertainties. The completed prototype underwent roll-out last autumn and subsequent ground runs at full power this year. Schildt envisions the first flight potentially occurring in the upcoming summer if financial stability is ensured, emphasizing that the aircraft has demonstrated its capabilities during ground tests.
