Avolon, a global aviation finance company, and Air New Zealand have partnered to support the commercialization of electric aircraft and novel propulsion technologies. The agreement includes a memorandum of understanding for research collaboration and the sale and leaseback of a BETA Alia CX300 electric cargo aircraft. The aircraft, designed by BETA Technologies, will be used by Air New Zealand for cargo operations between Wellington and Blenheim in partnership with New Zealand Post. This collaboration reflects a joint commitment to developing clean tech aircraft and achieving the aviation sector's net zero 2050 goal. Both CEOs highlighted the importance of lessors like Avolon in driving the commercialization of clean tech aircraft and the need for industry-wide engagement. Air New Zealand's Chief Financial Officer emphasized that introducing new technology into aviation requires collaboration across various stakeholders. The airline's Next Generation Aircraft program involves partnering with organizations to launch commercial flights using next-gen aircraft in 2026, with BETA's ALIA being the first order. This initiative signifies a step towards understanding the financing and operational aspects of future clean tech aircraft programs.
