BMW has announced its ambitious plans to introduce its first hydrogen-powered vehicle to the market in 2028, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corp. This new vehicle will be an existing model that offers a hydrogen fuel cell drive option, emphasizing technological advancements in shaping future mobility. The partnership between BMW and Toyota aims to streamline costs and develop a drive unit suitable for both passenger and commercial vehicles. BMW's commitment to hydrogen technology is evident through the testing of the iX5 Hydrogen, a hydrogen passenger vehicle with impressive features like a 500 km range and quick refueling in three to four minutes. The company is strategically developing fuel cell vehicle prototypes alongside battery-powered ones to be prepared for the transition to green technologies. A fuel cell vehicle operates similarly to an electric vehicle, drawing power from a fuel stack that separates hydrogen to generate electricity. While hydrogen-powered vehicles offer quick refueling and extended range, their adoption has been hindered by high costs and limited refueling infrastructure.
