In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the foundation stone of NTPC Green Energy Ltd's green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, marking a pivotal moment in India's green energy transition. This hub, situated at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, will be a crucial part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a target to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Modi emphasized the importance of Andhra Pradesh in leading futuristic technologies and highlighted the job creation potential and manufacturing ecosystem that the green hydrogen hub will bring to the state. The project, a collaboration between NGEL and NREDCAP, is set to develop 20 GW renewable energy projects, along with 1,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen derivatives. This integrated facility will include green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel production, positioning it as one of India's largest green hydrogen production setups. The investment expected from this initiative amounts to ₹1.85 trillion, contributing significantly to India's renewable energy capacity target of 500 GW by 2030. NGEL's ambitious plans don't stop there, with intentions to invest ₹5 trillion by 2030 in green energy and green molecule spaces. The company aims to expand its green energy capacity from 6 GW to 19 GW by 2026-27, with a focus on solar power. This initiative aligns with NTPC's broader strategy to decarbonize its operations and venture into the green energy domain, signaling a shift away from traditional coal-based power generation. Moreover, NGEL's collaborations extend beyond Andhra Pradesh, with similar agreements in place with the Rajasthan government for the development of 25 GW renewable energy projects. The company is also exploring partnerships with other state governments and global players for the supply of green hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel, and green methanol from the upcoming hub. This strategic move towards green molecules underscores the evolution of NTPC towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
