The South Australian Government is backing a feasibility study by Zero Petroleum to explore the development of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Whyalla. This project, called Plant Zero.SA, will focus on assessing the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of producing up to ten million liters of synthetic aviation fuel annually. The collaboration involves an aviation industry consortium led by Adelaide Airport and Qantas Airways, with the State Government playing a facilitating role. Whyalla, situated in South Australia's Upper Spencer Gulf, is at the center of the State Prosperity Project, which aims to establish the region as a hub for emerging industries leveraging hydrogen production for emissions reduction. The project highlights the importance of sustainable fuels in reducing emissions, with synthetic fuels created by combining renewable hydrogen with carbon dioxide. The South Australian Government sees sustainable fuels as vital for airlines to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The initiative is expected to create numerous job opportunities, both during construction and operation phases, spanning various roles in engineering, technical, and trade sectors. Key government officials and industry leaders, including South Australian Minister for Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis and Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson, express positivity about South Australia's potential to lead in sustainable aviation fuel production.
