Teesside Airport in the United Kingdom is making significant strides towards achieving operational net zero status by the end of the decade. Through a new deal with North East firm 121 Business Links, the airport is set to transition to 100% renewable energy, a key milestone in its journey towards sustainability. The airport's overarching goal is to become the UK's first operationally net zero airport by 2030, with plans also in place to incorporate solar power and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into its operations. Willis Sustainable Fuels (UK) Limited intends to establish a power-to-liquid SAF refinery in the region to further support the airport's sustainability objectives. Additionally, there are plans for a hydrogen refueling station near the former St George Hotel, a collaborative effort with Element 2, to bolster Teesside's position as a leader in net zero industries. The Tees Valley Combined Authority, a majority shareholder of the airport, has been actively involved in driving green projects in the region, having signed agreements with energy companies like SSE. Teesside Mayor Ben Houchen emphasized the positive impact of transitioning to renewable energy, highlighting the benefits for businesses operating at the airport and the region's overall push towards net zero industries. The partnership with 121 Business Links underscores a commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, setting a precedent for future collaborations.
