Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and Swiss cruise line Viking have joined forces to introduce the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra. This groundbreaking vessel, currently under construction in the Fincantieri Ancona shipyard, is set to be delivered by late 2026. Viking Libra, boasting impressive specifications including a hydrogen propulsion system and fuel cell technology capable of generating 6 MW of power, is designed to navigate and operate with zero emissions. The ship will be equipped with innovative solutions for storing hydrogen onboard, overcoming supply chain constraints. In addition to the Viking Libra project, Fincantieri is also building the hydrogen-powered Viking Astrea, scheduled for delivery in 2027. The companies have further solidified their partnership with an agreement to construct two more cruise ships by 2031. These new vessels will prioritize compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards while accommodating nearly 1000 passengers each. This strategic move towards hydrogen propulsion reflects a significant shift in the maritime industry towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. Viking's Chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, emphasized the company's commitment to investing in hydrogen as a true zero-emission solution. Both Fincantieri and Viking are dedicated to setting new standards for innovation and responsible shipbuilding, with a shared vision for a more sustainable cruise industry. The expansion of the fleet with hydrogen-powered vessels signifies a positive step towards reducing the carbon footprint of cruise operations and embracing cleaner energy sources.
