Hamburg Port Leads the Way: Hydrogen-Powered Test Field for Sustainable Logistics
Key Ideas
  • HHLA launches the first hydrogen-powered test field and refuelling station at the Port of Hamburg to evaluate hydrogen's potential as an energy source for heavy goods vehicles.
  • The project, supported by industry partners and government officials, aims to boost climate-friendly transport solutions and accelerate the adoption of emissions-free logistics.
  • The initiative aligns with HHLA's sustainability plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 and positions Hamburg as a hub for sustainable logistics through hydrogen technology.
  • The establishment of a public hydrogen refueling station aims to inspire other companies to embrace environmentally friendly transport technologies in port operations.
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has inaugurated the first hydrogen-powered test field and refuelling station at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) in the Port of Hamburg. This initiative, in collaboration with industry partners from the Clean Port & Logistics cluster, focuses on assessing hydrogen's viability as an energy source for heavy goods vehicles within port operations. The facility includes a hydrogen refuelling station capable of providing green hydrogen at 350 bar pressure to various vehicles like container stackers, forklift trucks, and more. During the inauguration ceremony, Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA, underlined the strategic significance of the test field in shaping the future of logistics. Prominent leaders like Dr. Melanie Leonhard and Christian Maaß emphasized the project's role in advancing climate-friendly transport solutions and achieving carbon neutrality targets. The Federal Ministry's three million euro grant supports this initiative to hasten the adoption of emissions-free logistics and port operations. The project aligns with HHLA's Balanced Logistics sustainability plan, aiming for climate neutrality by 2040 through extensive electrification and hydrogen technology integration. HHLA collaborates with global partners to develop and test hydrogen-powered solutions, driving innovation and operational efficiency in port handling and logistics. The investment in hydrogen infrastructure reinforces HHLA's operational objectives and positions Hamburg as a center for sustainable logistics. Moreover, the establishment of a public hydrogen refueling station not only supports HHLA's sustainability goals but also encourages other companies to explore and adopt eco-friendly transport technologies. The initiative signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient future for port operations in Hamburg and beyond.
