Hycamite TCD Technologies, a deep-tech company, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines subsidiaries, MOL PLUS and MOLEA, to explore the integration of methane-splitting technology in marine operations. Hycamite's technology focuses on breaking down methane molecules to generate clean hydrogen and solid carbon products, offering a solution with a low carbon footprint. The collaboration aims to leverage this innovative approach to address carbon emissions within the shipping industry. By establishing an industrial methane-splitting plant in Kokkola, Finland, scheduled to commence operations in early 2025, the partners intend to propel advancements in decarbonization efforts. Laura Rahikka, CEO of Hycamite, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership's potential to drive innovation in maritime decarbonization. The joint venture seeks to enhance the efficiency of LNG-fuelled ships by enabling the conversion of methane into hydrogen during voyages, while the solid carbon byproduct can be discharged at the destination port. This strategic alliance underscores a collective commitment to accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices and technologies in the maritime sector.
