Milestone Achieved in Rotterdam-Singapore Green Shipping Corridor with LBM Pilot
Key Ideas
  • Successful pilot conducted in Rotterdam for bunkering mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane (LBM) on a LNG-powered containership, supporting near-zero emission fuels.
  • Shell provided 100 tonnes of LBM made from waste-based feedstock, with a Proof of Sustainability certificate ensuring compliance with EU regulations.
  • End-to-end tracking methodology ensures transparency and compliance with global standards, setting benchmarks for sustainable fuel adoption in the maritime sector.
  • The Green and Digital Shipping Corridor plans to expand the use of sustainable fuels by conducting similar LBM bunkering trials in Singapore, furthering the mission of decarbonisation in shipping.
The Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) marked a significant achievement by successfully piloting bunkering mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane (LBM) at the Port of Rotterdam. Shell supplied 100 tonnes of LBM to the CMA CGM TIVOLI, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containership, showcasing the lower-emission alternative to conventional marine fuels. This milestone supports the GDSC's mission to promote near-zero emission fuels on busy shipping routes. The bio-methane working group, part of GDSC, is focused on advancing sustainable fuel solutions. The pilot applied a mass balance methodology, ensuring transparency and compliance with EU regulations through a Proof of Sustainability certificate. This effort will be audited by third-party organisations. The GDSC, launched in 2022, aims to accelerate decarbonisation and digitalisation in the maritime industry, with 28 global partners collaborating on sustainable initiatives. The pilot not only sets standards for sustainable fuel adoption but also opens pathways for recognising mass-balanced LBM under the EU Emissions Trading System. Future plans include conducting similar LBM trials in Singapore to further refine processes and enhance the use of sustainable fuels, showcasing a commitment to greener practices in the maritime sector.
