  • Led by the Dutch Innovation Society and supported by various partners, the project focuses on creating a new standard for decarbonizing European maritime logistics.
  • The vessel will feature advanced hydrogen propulsion technology, wind-assisted propulsion, and a waste heat recovery system to reduce overall hydrogen consumption.
  • Implementation of digital twin technology will enable real-time monitoring, operational optimization, and valuable data collection for hydrogen-powered shipping.
The Netherlands has initiated the H2ESTIA Project to create the world's first zero-emission general cargo ship powered by liquid hydrogen. This project, led by the Dutch Innovation Society (NIM) and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, aims to design, build, and demonstrate a hydrogen-powered cargo ship operating in the North Sea. The vessel, managed by Van Dam Shipping, will transport bulk goods while completely eliminating harmful emissions, setting a new standard for decarbonizing European maritime logistics. Extensive work is being carried out on certification of hydrogen systems, risk management, and crew training to ensure safe and efficient operations. The ship will utilize advanced hydrogen propulsion technology and integrate a cryogenic hydrogen storage and bunkering system to handle liquid hydrogen at low temperatures. Moreover, a hydrogen fuel cell system supported by batteries will provide a clean and efficient energy source without relying on fossil fuels. The inclusion of wind-assisted propulsion, waste heat recovery system, and digital twin technology for real-time monitoring will enhance efficiency, safety, and data collection. Various maritime and technology firms are collaborating on this project to address technical and regulatory challenges of integrating hydrogen into shipping, with industry experts optimistic about proving the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered ships and paving the way for future zero-emission vessels.
