Enova in Norway has introduced an $84 million support package to boost the development of zero-emission vessels in the maritime industry. The funding will facilitate projects such as seven ammonia carriers, two hydrogen carriers, five electric ships, and a maritime charging facility. This initiative underscores Norway's commitment to reducing maritime emissions significantly. Enova's Battery in Zero-Emission Ships program has strategic objectives focusing on making battery electrification a competitive zero-emission option for various vessel types, speeding up the transition to zero-emission solutions, and enhancing the value chain for maritime battery suppliers. The program is designed to address the current challenges where high battery costs and infrastructure uncertainties hinder investments. Enova aims to reduce risks and encourage more investments by offering financial support to shipbuilders for vessels primarily powered by land-charged batteries and for necessary charging infrastructure. Support rates can reach up to 80% of additional ship costs and up to 60% of charging facility expenses. Applications will be assessed competitively based on support requests per battery size and energy efficiency, with the first deadline set for May 28. The Coastal Shipping Association lauds Enova's program, recognizing its significance in promoting a sustainable future for shipping and aligning with the industry's environmental goals. Enova's previous grants of 65 million euros for five hydrogen projects in maritime fuel further demonstrate Norway's commitment to green maritime technologies.
