Norwegian transport company Torghatten Nord is making waves in the maritime industry with the construction of two groundbreaking ferries set to be the largest hydrogen-powered vessels globally. These ferries, designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company, will navigate the challenging Vestfjordstrekninga fjord in the Arctic Circle, powered by green hydrogen produced locally in Bodo, Norway. The ferries, built at the Cemre Shipyard in Turkey and Myklebust Verft shipyard in Norway, will incorporate the largest hydrogen installations ever seen in a ship, emphasizing safety and sustainability. The vessels, expected to be operational by 2026, will cover a demanding 278 km route in the Arctic Circle, primarily running on hydrogen to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Equipped with a biodiesel backup for safety, the ferries aim to prevent up to 26,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to Norway's commitment to environmental preservation.
