Viking and Fincantieri have jointly announced the groundbreaking development of the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra. This innovative vessel is currently under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard and is expected to be delivered in late 2026. The Viking Libra, classified as a small ship with a gross tonnage of around 54,300 tons, will feature 499 staterooms capable of accommodating up to 998 guests. One of the key highlights of this ship is its hybrid propulsion system, which will be based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling it to operate with zero emissions. This eco-friendly approach will allow the Viking Libra to access even the most environmentally sensitive areas, offering a unique and sustainable cruising experience. The commitment to environmental sustainability is a core focus for Viking, as evident from their decision to invest in hydrogen as a clean energy solution for their cruise ships. Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking, expressed pride in the environmentally friendly design of the Viking Libra and another hydrogen-powered ship, the Viking Astrea, currently under construction for delivery in 2027. Hagen emphasized the importance of hydrogen in reducing fuel consumption and emissions, positioning Viking as a leader in green maritime practices. Fincantieri's CEO, Pierroberto Folgiero, also praised the collaboration with Viking in pioneering sustainable maritime transportation. The partnership aims to set new standards for innovation and responsible shipbuilding, with a shared vision for a more sustainable cruise industry. The announcement of additional ship orders signifies the continued growth and expansion of Viking's fleet, with plans for more river and ocean ships in the coming years.
