Viking and Fincantieri have unveiled details about the Viking Libra, the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, slated for delivery in late 2026. This groundbreaking vessel, currently under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard, will pave the way for sustainable maritime transportation. The Viking Astrea, another ocean ship by the companies, is also set to be hydrogen powered. Both ships will feature a hybrid propulsion system leveraging liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, ensuring zero emissions during operation. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and 499 staterooms accommodating 998 guests, the Viking Libra is a significant leap in environmentally conscious cruising. The propulsion system, capable of generating up to six megawatts of power, is developed by Isotta Fraschini Motori, a subsidiary of Fincantieri specializing in fuel cell technology. Viking's Chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, expressed pride in the decision to invest in hydrogen, emphasizing the genuine zero-emission solution it offers. Fincantieri's CEO Pierroberto Folgiero highlighted the strategic importance of this project in shaping a more sustainable maritime future. This initiative also signifies the partnership's shared vision for an eco-friendly cruise industry and further collaboration in innovation and responsible shipbuilding. Apart from the groundbreaking hydrogen-powered ships, Viking's growth strategy includes additional ship orders, aiming to expand its fleet significantly by 2031. The company plans to introduce more river and ocean ships, solidifying its position as a leader in experiential travel while driving sustainability in the maritime sector.
