Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step towards sustainable public transportation with the launch of a fleet of 'green buses' running on hydrogen and electricity. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) initiated the Green Bus Programme to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly transportation. The program includes the evaluation of the buses' performance in local conditions, starting with route number 65 between Marina Mall and Shams Boutique on Reem Island. By 2030, Abu Dhabi aims to transition the island into a green public transport zone, with a long-term goal of establishing a sustainable public transport system by 2050. Partnerships with South Korea and China are facilitating the evaluation and selection of suitable hydrogen and electric bus technologies, alongside the development of Emirati skills through training programs abroad. The program, which began last year, also involves collaborations with bus manufacturers to enhance technical specifications and operational support. The recent inauguration of the first hydrogen station in the UAE in Masdar City, in partnership with ADNOC, underscores the commitment to embracing green technology and reducing carbon footprint in the transportation sector.
