BC Transit's Green Fleet Expansion Plan for a Sustainable Future
Key Ideas
- BC Transit plans to add over 900 new buses in the next 3-5 years to achieve GHG emission reduction targets set by British Columbia.
- The fleet acquisition strategy includes purchasing 141 electric buses, including heavy duty, double decker, and light duty buses to support service expansion.
- In addition to electric buses, BC Transit will purchase 80 diesel double decker buses and 105 heavy duty hybrid buses while incorporating hydrogenated derived renewable diesel for emission reductions.
- To replace aging buses and meet service expansion needs, BC Transit aims to acquire a total of 590 buses by 2029, with a potential additional 312 buses by the same year.
BC Transit has revealed its plan to enhance its fleet by adding more than 900 new buses in the next three to five years. The primary goal of this fleet acquisition strategy is to meet the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets established by the province of British Columbia, aiming for a 40 percent reduction in bus emissions by 2030 and 60 percent by 2040. The strategy involves optimizing the fleet, replacing aging vehicles, and introducing new buses to support service expansion. BC Transit has secured funding for 141 electric buses, including heavy duty, double decker, and light duty buses. The organization has ordered 125 heavy duty electric buses from New Flyer of America and Nova Bus, with the first batch expected for use in the Victoria Regional Transit System in early 2025. Moreover, BC Transit is also acquiring diesel double decker and heavy duty hybrid buses, alongside using hydrogenated derived renewable diesel to reduce GHG emissions. The organization plans to procure approximately 590 buses between 2026 and 2029 to replace aging buses, with a potential need for 312 more buses to meet future service expansion requirements.
