Canada's Zero-Emission Bus Progress Report: Driving Towards a Greener Future
Key Ideas
- Canada is set to exceed its goal of 5,000 Zero-Emission Buses (ZEBs) by 2026, with a potential reach of 7,000 by the end of that year.
- Ontario leads in Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) deployment, with Quebec following closely, emphasizing the progress in ZEB technology adoption.
- CUTRIC's report highlights the challenges of high costs for electrification infrastructure and the emerging hydrogen supply chains in the journey towards zero-emissions.
- Zero-emissions transit vehicles play a vital role in reducing Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the country's climate change mitigation efforts.
The Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) has published the fifth edition of the Canadian Zero-Emission Bus (ZEB) Database, showcasing the progress of ZEB technology adoption up to July 2024. The report indicates that Canada is on track to surpass its 5,000 ZEB goal by 2026, with a possible reach of 7,000 by the end of that year. Currently, there are 5,459 ZEBs in various stages of deployment across the country, comprising 5,370 Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) and 89 Fuel Cell Electric Buses (FCEBs). Ontario leads in BEBs deployment, with Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia following in ZEB adoption. Josipa Petrunic, President and CEO of CUTRIC, acknowledges the progress made in electrifying buses but emphasizes the necessity to address challenges such as high electrification infrastructure costs and the nascent hydrogen supply chains. The report underlines the crucial role of zero-emissions transit vehicles in Canada's efforts to combat climate change, as the transportation sector is a significant contributor to the country's greenhouse gas emissions. CUTRIC's database serves as a valuable resource for governments, transit agencies, and manufacturers in understanding the advancements and barriers in transitioning to electrified transit operations. The report reinforces the importance of collective efforts, supported by initiatives like the federal Zero Emission Transit Fund, to achieve a sustainable future for Canada's public transit system.
