Houston METRO Introduces Zero-Emission Electric Buses to Enhance Customer Experience
Key Ideas
  • METRO in Houston has introduced zero-emission electric buses on two routes to provide passengers with a quieter and smoother ride.
  • The initiative aims to improve service reliability, accessibility, and equity for communities, including minority, low-income, and transit-dependent populations.
  • The electric buses come with features like USB charging ports, wheelchair securement areas, and ADA accessibility, contributing to a more comfortable and inclusive transit experience.
  • This transition is part of a broader effort by METRO to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transit system, which includes plans to expand the electric bus fleet with FTA grants.
METRO in Houston, specifically the Metro Transit Authority of Harris County, is introducing its first zero-emission electric buses for regular service on two bus routes in the city. The 402 Bellaire Quickline and 28 OST — Wayside routes will now operate with electric buses, replacing older diesel vehicles. This move is part of a pilot project aimed at enhancing the customer experience and improving service reliability. The electric buses are equipped with features like USB charging ports, wheelchair securement areas, and more space for ADA patrons, making the rides more comfortable and accessible. METRO's Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock emphasized that this initiative is an investment in customers, especially those in communities with minority, low-income, and transit-dependent populations. By introducing electric buses, METRO is also addressing environmental justice gaps and helping to reduce air pollution in neighborhoods like the Fifth Ward. The transition to electric buses aligns with METRO's goal of building a more sustainable and eco-friendly transit system. While the agency already operates clean-running diesel-electric hybrid buses, they are looking to expand their electric bus fleet with the help of an FTA grant, which will include both electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric buses in the near future.
