In a significant step towards promoting sustainable public transport, a tripartite agreement was signed in Odisha involving the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), NTPC, and GRIDCO to launch a green hydrogen mobility project. The agreement, signed in the presence of Odisha Deputy Chief Minister and Housing and Urban Development minister, outlines the responsibilities of each entity over the next five years. CRUT will be responsible for maintaining hydrogen-powered buses, NTPC will focus on hydrogen production, and GRIDCO will ensure the supply of renewable energy for the project. This initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to address climate change by reducing carbon emissions and introducing green hydrogen buses as an eco-friendly alternative to diesel buses. The deployment of three hydrogen-powered buses by NTPC, each with 42 seats, is expected to improve public transport while providing a sustainable solution. The buses are designed to offer a mileage of 12 km per kilogramme of hydrogen and can cover up to 600 km on 58 kg of fuel. NTPC plans to set up a hydrogen production plant at the CRUT depot in Bhubaneswar and utilize the existing infrastructure for gas generation. The project is also supported by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARIA) with an investment of Rs 19.5 crore.
