St. Louis Public Schools Receive Funding for Zero-Emission Buses
Key Ideas
- St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) secured funding for 30 zero-emission buses to replace diesel buses, promoting a cleaner, greener future.
- The EPA's Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program, created by President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, supports projects like SLPS's initiative.
- The grant program aims to reduce harmful emissions, improve air quality for communities, and create jobs in clean transportation.
- Funds will also go towards infrastructure, workforce development, and training to advance the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected 70 applicants, including St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS), to receive funding for zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles, infrastructure, and workforce development projects. SLPS requested 30 zero-emission buses, funded by the EPA's Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program under President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, to replace diesel buses and reduce emissions of harmful pollutants. The school district plans to partner with Highland Electric Fleets for project implementation. EPA Region 7 Administrator Meghan A. McCollister commended SLPS's commitment to a cleaner future.
The grant program also supports the replacement of older, high-polluting vehicles with battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell transit buses, among others. The initiative aims to address air pollution, protect vulnerable populations, and ensure safe air for millions of Americans living near truck freight routes. Additionally, the program will fund infrastructure for zero-emission vehicle fueling, workforce development, and training to advance the adoption of clean transportation solutions. The EPA prioritizes disadvantaged communities through the Justice40 Initiative and plans to use a significant portion of the funds for projects benefiting these communities. The program aligns with President Biden's vision of clean technologies to combat climate change and create job opportunities in the green economy.
